Just using the basic Contrast control can be rather crude. Paintsshop Pro allows you more subtle adjustment options to try and get a better result. Just as with the Histogram adjustment, you can influence specific tone ranges in the image, such as just the midtones or highlights or just two of those together.

Try the simple exercise below:

Step 1 - download the image
Word header

Click on the small version of the image on the left or click here . That will open up a larger version in a new window. Tight click on the larger version and choose 'Save image as' from the drop down menu. Save it in your My Pictures folder or on your USB stick.

N.B. this image may take a while to download as it has been left fairly large to properly show the artefacts.

When you have downloaded the image, start Paintshop Pro and use FILE > OPEN to locate the image and open it.

Step 2 - Apply contrast controls
Navigate to your chosen file

Open the dialogue box ADJUST > BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST > HIGHLIGHT/MIDTONE/SHADOW.
In the dialogue use the Zoom out to get a better overall view.
Ensure the Preset drop down is set to Default.
Then click on the Dynamic adjustment radio button (circled in red).
Now change the Midtone value to around 15 and the Highlight value to 20 (red rectangular area).
Note the result. Adjust further if required.
Use FILE > SAVE AS
to save the modified version with a different file name, then open the original again to compare the two.

Try different values if you wish and note their effects.

Don't forget to insert the pictures into a Word document and print out.
