Sepia tinting is a commonly used effect for photos - sometimes to create a series of images that can be used together from a disparate selection of original colour and black and white images.

There are two ways of creating sepia tinted images in Paintshop Pro: The 'automatic' method using Paintshop Pro's built in Effects filter and the 'manual' method - adjusting the Hue and Saturation of the image.

Method 1
the File menu

First of all, open an image in Paintshop Pro. For this task, the image of a statue has been used.

Upload the image and save it to your own PC.

Then with the image open, go to the menu option: EFFECTS > ARTISTIC EFFECTS > SEPIA TONING (as shown).

Sepia dialogue box

Then convert the image to a sepia toned one by using the 'Amount to age' control.

You might want to zoom out using the controls on the left, underneath the 'original' image preview pane.

Method 2
Sepia using Hue and Saturation 1

An alternative method is to use the Hue and Saturation control. This method gives you more control and in some peoples' view, a more authentic result.

Again, open your original image in Paintshop Pro, then use the menu option: ADJUST > HUE AND SATURATION > COLORIZE.

Open your file

You will then get the dialogue box on the left. Use the Hue control to select a base tint colour. In this case around 28 will make a brown/ochre colour. Typing in the figure or using the colour slider for this are the two ways of selecting the colour. Then adjust the Saturation control to decide on the strength of the colour.
