Before you start working with Paint.net, take a little while to study the programs Workspace:

The Workspace
The workspace
Introduction
This sheet just explains the main parts of the workspace that you should see when you open up the program. The screenshot above shows the program open with the most useful pallettes and toolbars. There will be a further info sheet on the tools themselves (in section D on the screenshot).
Guide to Main Parts

A - The Menus - Paint.net is a Windows program and has a normal menu structure, with the most common menu options on the left of the menu bar: File, Edit, View.

B - The Standard Toolbar. Again similar to most Windows applications. This is where you choose the tool for common actions; opening, printing etc.

C - Tool Options - This is context sensitive and show the options of whichever tool you currently have selected.

D - The Toolbar - Where you select which tool you want to use. (Refer to subsequent sheet for a guide to each of these).

E - The Colours Pallette - Select the colours you want to use for the relevant tool (brush, line, text etc.). There are two main 'swatches' in this pallette; to set the 'foreground' and 'background' colour.

F - Tool help - pay attention to this. Here you will get instant help on the tool you have selected.

G - Layers pallette - used for adding and removing layers. Also for controlling how a layer works (i.e. retouching effects).
