Assessment at the end of the course is based on the submission of an OCR set assessment task. During the course, you will be required to produce a portfolio of print outs of your work, including a series of set tasks and short questionnaires set by your tutor. Successful completion will entitle you to an OCR Level 1 award and a certificate will be forwarded to you by the college. Please ensure you are enrolled with the college and that we have an up to date address for you.

There are illustrated instructions for making evidence sheets here

Presenting evidence

All print outs should have the class title: i.e. ‘Web Page Design CLAiT Unit 7 Web Page Creation ’ and your name at the top of the page. Below that should be the task number and/or title if one has given to you by the tutor or put on the handout. The last item can be typed below the screen grab if you wish. You may produce print outs at home if you wish and this will improve your portfolio if you have a colour inkjet printer. You may also practice tasks at home as well if you have an appropriate application. It does not have to be the application we use in class, as long as you are evidencing the appropriate techniques and skills

'Screenshots' or 'screengrabs'

One of the best ways to present your working method in a program is to do a ‘screenshot’ (sometimes referred to as 'screen grabs') at the final stage to show the palettes and tools you are working with and the image loaded in to the program. You should then insert the screenshot into a word processor such as Microsoft Word. Your tutor may ask you to make screen shots of a work in progress from applications – sometimes with two browser or program windows open – then paste it into Word and print it out.

Making a screenshot and pasting it into Word

It’s a simple process. First start Word and a blank document. Then with the application or Internet Explorer (if you are previewing web pages) open and the correct image/page loaded, you hold down the ALT key and then press the ‘Print Screen’ (or PRNT SCRN) key (usually found to the right of the Function keys section on the top of your keyboard). This will capture the screen image to Clipboard. You then switch to Word and use the Menu command: EDIT > PASTE. This will paste the screen grab into Word, usually automatically sizing it to the page width.

The above technique captures only the currently open window. To capture the whole Desktop, just press the Print Screen key only. Don’t forget to type the details required (as at the top of this document) into your document and then print it out. You may want to save it too.

Saving work

It is important that you save your work regularly and use the ‘Save As’ command when directed by the tutor to preserve any original image that you may make changes to. If you are at all unsure about where you are saving work, or making a folder on the computer system for your work and so on, please ask your tutor for assistance – ignorance is not bliss if you cannot find your work when you want to print it or copy it to disk to take home!

Absence

As you will see from the Course Outline and Evidence Checklist, there are quite a lot of tasks to get through in 10 weeks. I will try to assist any student that may miss a session catch up on their return but it not always possible to devote a great deal of time to this. Please ask for any handouts that may have been given out for tasks. Any student that misses three weeks or more may have to opt out of submitting a portfolio for assessment.
