In response to a learner's request, the next two tasks are centred around the necessity to create a and apply a 'watermark' to a batch of photos, which is something you might want to do if you have undertaken a commercial commission and you want to submit proof prints prior to the customer ordering final prints.

This short task involves creating a custom watermark or logo as an artwork and then turning it into a Custom Shape within Photoshop. You will use type, Photoshop's own Custom Shape tool and the Paths option.

Step 1 - Create a new image
Click here for full sized image

Create a new image using the FILE > NEW command. The image should have a white background and these parameters:
Width: 24cm
Height: 12 cm
Resolution: 200 pixels per inch.

Give it a name as well: i.e. 'My Watermark'

Step 2 - Add Type to the image
Navigate to your chosen file

Choose the type tool, select a bold sans serif font (preferably Franklin Gothic Demi Condensed), and set the size to 60pt.

Make sure the colours are set to default (black and white) then type a suitable line. I've used 'Pete's Photography' but the word copyright could be used. Us the Move tool to place the type bottom centre of the image.

Finally right click on the Type layer and choose 'Rasterize Layer'

Step 3 - Add a symbol
select your file

What you need now is a copyright symbol. Fortunately Photoshop has one ready made. Just select the Custom Shape tool (circled left), but from the Paths section of the Toolbar. Then above your tpye and as central as you can, 'draw' a copyright symbol. Hold the shift key down to keep it in proportion.

If you need to select and move the copyright symbol, use the rectangular Marquee selection tool, then the Move tool.

Step 4 - Make a Work Path
Applying a layer effect

Once you have created a suitable watermark logo, you need to convert it into a Custom Shape.
Using the Magic Wand tool, with no feather and the 'Add to Selection' button on, click inside (i.e. on the black part) of each letter/shape in the logo to select it all.
then on the Layers palette, choose the Paths tab, then the small arrow to show the flyout menu. On that menu select 'Make Work Path' (as shown left). Set the tolerance to its lowest: 0.5 pixels.
Finally use the menu command: EDIT > DEFINE CUSTOM SHAPE. In the dialogue box that appears, give your shape/logo a new name and OK.

You don't have to save or print this image as its main purpose is to be used in the next task - making a watermark.
